John Dumelo: Biography, Career, Movies & More

John Dumelo is one of the most talented movie stars to come out of Ghana. From his humble beginning as a kid actor, Dumelo has grown to become an established African movie star.

The actor has scooped several awards and endorsements over the years. Recently, he made the list of the top 10 African celebrities on social media based on the 2017 African Social Media Power Report.

Early life & Education

Dumelo was born on the 3rd of February 1984 to John and Antoniette Dumelo. He is the last child with two older sisters.

The actor attended Christ the King School in Accra where he received his primary education and proceeded to Achimota School for his secondary education.

Dumelo enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he studied Civil Engineering.

Career

Dumelo started out as a child actor in the early 90s. He featured in the movie, Baby Thief.

He got this role when the GAMA Film Company visited his school and selected him to play the role of pupil in the movie.

The actor became popular when he featured in the hit series, Sun City. Subsequently, he made his debut in the Nigerian movie scene in 2007.

Awards

Dumelo has been nominated for several awards. He has also won some awards over the last few years. The actor achieved a significant milestone on Facebook on the 1st of April 2014 when he became the first Ghanaian citizen to hit a million likes on Facebook.

  • Best Actor in a Leading role at the 2010 Best of Nollywood Awards Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in the movie, The Maidens
  • Most Promising Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for his role in the movie, Heart of Men
  • Best Actor in a supporting role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for his role in the movie, Private Storm
  • Best Actor in a lead role at the 2012 Ghana Movie Awards for his role in the Queen Latifa

Dumelo’s awards include:

  • Best Actor at the Joy FM Awards in 2009
  • African Most Outstanding Actor at the 2011 Afro Australian Movies and Music Awards
  • Best Actor in a lead role at the 2013 Ghana Movie Awards for his role in movie, A Northern Affair

Endorsements

Dumelo is an ambassador for Ghandour Cosmetics. He received this endorsement alongside Nollywood icon, Omotola Jalade.

The actor revealed that he was made a Ghandour ambassafor based on his unique fashion sense

Nollywood  

Dumelo debuted in Nollywood in 2007. He has featured in several Yoruba and Igbo language movies. Interestingly, the actor speaks Yoruba and Igbo fluently. He disclosed that his sojourn in Nigeria has been pivotal in his knowledge of these languages.

Marriage

Although, Dumelo is currently single, he seems to know a thing or two about marriage. The actor revealed in a tweet on how men should treat their wives or girlfriend as he revealed that women love to be complimented because it makes them feel special.

The actor also revealed in an interview that marriage is about staying in love and making it work.

Engagement

There was a photo of a lady’s finger with a ring on Dumelo’s instagram page which went viral as many thought that the eternal bachelor had finally decided to take the bold step towards marriage.

However, it was discovered that it was Dumelo’s best friend, Fred Nuamah that just proposed to his girlfriend, Martekor.

Nuamah is the Chief Executive of the Ghana Movie Awards and the proposal happened while they were aboard a flight to Liberia to attend the inauguration of Liberian President, George Weah. 

Independence Day

On the 6th of March, 2018 which was Ghana’s Independence Day, Dumelo criticized the government on his Twitter page. But the actor received a backlash from fans as they attributed his comments to the fact that the current government isn’t as favourable to him as the past one had been.

Networth

Dumelo is said to be worth an estimated $650,000. He earns a substantial part of his income from acting and endorsements. The actor is also into agriculture and fashion.

Yvonne Nelson

Yvonne Nelson and Dumelo have always been known as great friends. However, there were reports that their friendship had gone awry due to Dumelo’s failure to support a campaign launched by Yvonne Nelson sometime in 2015.

The actress accused Dumelo of having close ties with the government which she believed was the reason for his absence.

Dumelo reacted to her allegations and the duo kept going back and forth with accusations using their official social made pages.

However, Dumelo revealed in an interview that they had sorted out their differences.

Ebony

Dumelo commented on the death of popular Ghanaian musician, Ebony by labelling himself and his colleagues as hypocrites.

It will be recalled that the 20 year old dance hall rapper died in a gruesome road accident. She was in the company of two military officers who also died in the accident.

Dumelo revealed that entertainers don’t show concern to themselves when they are alive but they are often quick to respond and show sympathy at their death.

Shatta Wale

The actor had something to say about the recent Shatta Wale controversy when he labelled the prophet, Cosmos Walker Affran who had claimed that the musician will die before the end of 2018 as a fake.
