University of Ilorin is one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Nigeria of today. On several occasions, the school had been voted the best federal university in Nigeria. It was established in 1975 and it presently has up to 35,000 students on admission in various departments and faculties.The school is located in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The institution began academic activities in 1976 with 200 students. The first sets of faculties at inception were Faculties of Education, Science and Art. During the years of development that followed, the school authorities dedicated its time and resources mostly to science development with registration of more science-oriented programs.
It was not until 1993 did the institution established Faculty of Law. The faculty however began as an ordinary department in the faculty of Business and Social Sciences in 1983. The institution is divided into two campuses, the main campus and the College of Health Sciences campus. Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences are the only faculties not located on the main campus.
As at today, university of Ilorin has grown from the three faculties it had at inception to 15 different faculties. The institution has more than 60 academic departments.
