  1. Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE)

FUPRE was established in 2007 after the university’s approval by the Federal Executive Council.

Located in Effurun, Delta, the school admitted its first set of undergraduates in 2008.

FUPRE was established with the vision of providing a specialized university in the Niger Delta to produce manpower and expertise for the oil and gas sector.

Initially, FUPRE was housed in the Petroleum Training Institute Effurun before it moved to its permanent site at Ugbomro, Uvwie Local Government Area in 2010.

  1. University of Benin (UNIBEN)

The University of Benin is one of the top universities in the country offering Petroleum Engineering.

In 2017, UNIBEN emerged the 1st runner up at the Petrobowl Competition in 2017. It was the first African school to get to the finals of the competition. The PetroBowl competition was founded in 2002 and was created, organized, and administered by the SPE Gulf Coast Section taking place once a year during the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE). As its popularity grew, a two-stage pilot program was introduced in 2013 to transition the contest into a truly global event. This included two regional qualifiers taking place in Africa and Asia in 2014, and an expansion to six regional qualifiers in 2015. Following the successful completion of the pilot program, PetroBowl is now recognized as an SPE International global program.

The UNIBEN Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering was established in 2006 after approval by the Federal Government. The department took off with a population of 100 students in two departments; Petroleum Engineering and Gas Engineering.

  1. University of Ibadan (UI)

The Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Ibadan is one of the oldest and best in the country.

It was formally established in 1972 as one of the foundation departments of the Faculty of Technology and very well equipped by the Canadian Agency for International Development (CIDA).

Located in Calabar, Cross River, UNICAL is one of Nigeria’s second-generation federal universities.

The University used to be a campus of the University of Nigeria until 1975. UNICAL was established by decree to fulfill this traditional mandate, its motto “Knowledge for Service”.

  1. Rivers State University of Science and Technology

Rivers State University of Science and Technology is located in Rivers state. It is the first technological university in Nigeria and also the first university to be situated within the Niger Delta.

In 2014, RSUST was rated the 14th best in the country.

In the 70s, the Department of Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering was established in 1970 along with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Marine Engineering under the School of Engineering of the former College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.

In 1980, the law establishing the Rivers State University of Science and Technology was promulgated which transferred to the University the assets and liabilities of the College. Thus, the School of Engineering in the former College of Science and Technology became the Faculty of Engineering of the University, comprising the aforementioned five departments.

  1. Admin, your list cannot be complete without the inclusion of the University of Uyo. Two time back to back winners (2017 & 2018) of petrobowl in Nigeria. Currently the runner up in the last edition (2019).

    Besides, university of calabar does not offer petroleum engineering. And how can you forget university of Port Harcourt?
