Bad Breath: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments


Bad breath which is known as halitosis medically is breath that has odor and also unpleasant or a horrible odor in the mouth. This odor can strike persistently at regular intervals, depending on the cause. In most cases, the bacteria that live in the mouth majorly on the rear of the tongue are the main causes of bad breath.

Bad breath could be as a result of the following:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Infections in the mouth
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Throat infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Lung infections
  • Consumption of foods such as garlic, onions and coffee
  • Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia)
  • Systemic illnesses and psychiatric illness.

Symptoms of bad breath:

  • Unpleasant odor or taste in the mouth
  • White coating on the tongue
  • Persistent dry mouth
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Pain or difficulty with chewing or swallowing
  • Broken teeth or dental pain
  • White spots on the tonsils
  • Fever
  • Treatments for bad breath

Treatments of bad breath:

  • Proper oral hygiene
  • Use of mouthwash
  • Sugar-free gum
  • Quitting smoking and changing bad habits
  • Proper tooth brushing
  • Avoiding foods that cause bad breath

But if these do not eliminate it, see a dentist or doctor for a diagnosis. It is prudent to consult a doctor or dentist if bad breath arises after using an unfamiliar medication or if any other symptom that rouses your concern develops.
